Freedom's Trip with McKenzie to California

For spring break, I took Freedom to San Francisco for a four-day trip where we stayed with family friends and had a beautiful view of Twin Peaks and the San Francisco Bay!

Freedom and I visited tons of places in San Francisco. We went to the California Academy of Sciences, hiked in Land’s End with awesome views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and went to Dolores Park, which had a huge playground and even tightrope performers. At Land’s End, we touched the Pacific Ocean, which was way colder than at the beach at home.

We also went to the top of Twin Peaks and, after a cable car ride, walked through the whole city (with lots of stairs and hills). We stopped at Ghiradelli Square for a 10:00 AM brownie sundae, Little Italy for a yummy pasta lunch and Chinatown for some homemade fortune cookies!  My favorite stop was Fisherman’s Wharf where we saw tons of Sea Lions – they were very loud and funny!

I also saw the house from Full House, the redwood forest in Muir Woods and tons of animals at the San Francisco Zoo. It was amazing to see so many tall trees in Muir Woods – I thought the trees in Wilmington were big and old, but these trees were even taller and older! We even learned about taking care of the environment since you have to compost in San Francisco – we’ve started composting at home now because of seeing it in San Francisco. The trip home was long but cool, too, since we saw tons of snow as we flew over the Rocky Mountains. It was way more snow than we see in Wilmington.
We had a great spring break! I hope to go back to San Francisco soon!

Liberty and Mia Spend Spring Break in Turks and Caicos

For spring break I took Liberty to Turks and Caicos. We had so much fun! We stayed five nights at the Beaches resort. They have a water park and seven pools to swim in.
playing soccer
holding a kittenThe grounds are beautiful as well. There are flowers and palm trees everywhere. We played a lot of soccer in the grassy area in front of our room and met lots of feral kitty cats. We almost brought one home!

on a glass-bottomed boat
getting ready to snorkelThere were so many fun ocean activities. One of my favorite activities was snorkeling. We saw really cool sea animals like parrot fish and puffer fish. The coral was beautiful! Another favorite activity was a glass-bottom boat ride. We saw a huge stingray!

on the beachThe beach was so pretty. The water is the most beautiful shade of blue. I learned that the water is so blue because in the Caribbean the sea is calm, warm, and has minimal sea life.

We had a great spring break! I hope we can go again soon!

Justice's Summer Vacation at White Lake

When my family and I went to White Lake, NC we had a great time. We go to White Lake every summer and have been going since I was a baby. Justice and I did a lot of fun things. We went on a boat ride, played games in the arcade and went to the amusement park to ride the rides and play games. We also did a little bit of shopping. My two most favorite things that we did was play games in the arcade and drive the bumper cars. We had a lot of fun and I can’t wait to go back next summer!

Freedom Goes on a Field Trip to Airlie Gardens with Ms. Collins' and Mrs. Joyce's 3rd Grade

We had the best time on our field trip to Airlie Gardens. We saw the butterfly house, tranquility gardens, the bottle chapel, the Airlie oak and Airlie lake.

We started our visit at the Great Oak. It is estimated to be over 400 years old!

On our way to the bottle chapel we got lost, and Callie found a turtle. The bottle chapel is made of over 200 glass bottles. When you look closely, you can see that there are hidden pictures made of bottles. You can blow into the bottles to make music, and some of the bottles are shaped like interesting things.

After the bottle chapel, we went to the butterfly house. The butterfly house is a dome-shaped building where the butterflies can fly free. In the butterfly house, we tried to get the butterflies to land on our hands, but sometimes they landed on our clothes, shoes and heads. Maxim even had a butterfly bow tie!

In the tranquility gardens, there were two fountains. We stopped there to rest and take a few pictures. We also saw a carpenter bee.

From the tranquility garden, we walked to Airlie Lake. On the way there we saw a mother swan and her babies. We saw a big turtle swimming by, and lots of sunfish and pretty leaves in the water. There were also lots of water plants for the fish to hide in. There were steps leading into the water and we wondered where they led to. Next to the lake was the pergola garden, with statues of Greek gods and goddesses. There was a very long path lined with columns.

After the pergola garden, we met up with our guide, Mr. Ben. On the nature trail, Skyler spotted a corn snake, and Vincent almost stepped on it! Then we went to a little dock where we learned about the three things that make up soil: sand, clay and silt.

After the dock, we searched a fallen tree for bugs called decomposers. The log looked like it had been hollowed out by termites and grubs, and all the bark was rotted and dried out and turning into soil. Mr. Ben told us that the log had been decomposing for a year already.

Then we got to dig up our own decomposers! We found grubs, spiders, termites, worms, ants, rollie pollies, beetles and gnats. Mr. Ben showed us pieces of trees and taught us about heartwood, and how to tell how old a tree is by the number of rings. Then we learned all the different parts of a tree.

Finally, we ended our day by eating our lunch and playing in the meadow.

Skyler and Gabriella Take Freedom to Florida for Spring Break

Freedom joined Skyler, Gabriella and their family, as well as some other Parsley Patriots, on a vacation to Florida over Spring Break.  Skyler describes his vacation in these pictures:

When we were in our wetsuits, it was tight and very hot. Our captain's name was Bill. He swam with us. At our first stop I saw a manatee. Then we went to Jurassic Spring. The water was so clear. I loved swimming with the manatees. I even named one. I named him Jimmy.

We were closing in, 30 minutes away, but we stopped at an orange grove. The oranges were so bright and beautiful. I got a venison beef stick. My mom got orange candies and chocolate. Freedom tried to steal an orange, but my dad caught her. I wish I could've had one.

Our campsite was super big. There were five tents set up. We ate no Smores, just marshmallows. Harper and I told ghost stories before bed. Me, Harper, and Dane (former Patriot) all whittled spears. Our campsite was awesome.
